Collecting Collectors, 2010
Poster, A0
This work was created as a reaction to the relationship between collector and artist in which the artist is often (just as his art) becoming an object himself („you collect this or that artist“) wherein a certain balance of power is expressed. If you want to collect art that is already well-known or on the rise this is mostly a rather elitist affair as it requires a certain amount of money, maybe even a certain background.
In my work „Collecting Collectors“ I´m interested in reversing this balance of power and therefore in making it possible for everyone who is interested to collect the collectors themselves. Thus collecting gets democratized. The poster is also hinting at the „wanted-poster“-aesthetic. Everyone who is collecting the collectors (whose names have been found on a list of the 200 most powerful collectors that is published by an US-art-magazine every year) via online-research etc. is getting his very own and unique poster though the poster is produced as a democratizing matter in the first place. This work also aims to make the collectors visible behind their names, to give them a face. So the poster may also serve as a humorous who is who that artists can use to recognize collectors at openings etc. Because finally they want to be collected. It´s a closed circuit.
